How to Prepare for Your First Professional Cleaning
No need to clean before the cleaners: focus on access, priorities, pets and protecting personal belongings.

Preparing for a cleaning visit does not mean doing the cleaning first. The goal is to make work areas accessible, share your priorities and identify anything that needs special care. A few practical steps can make the visit easier for everyone.
Clear access, not every speck of dust
Put away loose clothing, toys and paperwork where practical. Clear the surfaces you want cleaned so the team can reach them. Secure valuables, important documents and medication in a private place. Leave heavy furniture where it is unless safe movement has been specifically arranged.
Share your priorities
- Identify your most important rooms and tasks.
- Point out fragile objects, loose fittings and delicate finishes.
- Mark rooms or surfaces that should be left untouched.
- Share manufacturer care instructions when available.
Specific requests are more helpful than broad phrases. For example, mention shower buildup or kitchen cabinet fronts rather than simply asking for “extra attention.”
Plan for pets and access
Arrange a comfortable, secure place for pets away from active cleaning. Confirm entry and parking instructions through the agreed channel. Keep children away from work areas and cleaning products. Do not post door codes or private access details publicly.
Confirm the details
Ask about supplies and equipment, which rooms are included and whether appliance interiors, laundry or dishes are part of the visit. Discuss known sensitivities in advance. Do not leave unfamiliar chemicals out with an expectation that they will be used; products must be appropriate for the surfaces and handled according to their labels.
Before the team leaves
If a walkthrough is arranged, use it to review your original priorities and mention anything that needs clarification. Note damaged materials or maintenance problems separately from cleaning concerns. Clear communication helps the first appointment establish a useful routine for future visits.
