Your Room-by-Room Move-Out Cleaning Checklist
A practical plan for leaving an empty home fresh, from kitchen cabinets to the final walkthrough.

Moving day already has enough moving parts. A room-by-room cleaning plan helps you avoid doing the same work twice and makes the final walkthrough easier. Start with your lease or handover instructions: they determine what needs attention, and cleaning alone cannot guarantee a deposit refund.
Before you begin
Schedule cleaning after furniture and boxes are out, while electricity and water are still available. Set aside rubbish bags, microfiber cloths, a vacuum and products suitable for your surfaces. Separate damage or maintenance issues from cleaning tasks so they can be reported clearly.
- Check whether appliance interiors, windows or carpet care are specifically required.
- Empty cabinets, drawers and closets before cleaning them.
- Work from high surfaces down, leaving floors until last.
Kitchen: finish the hidden spaces
Remove crumbs from empty drawers and wipe shelves, cabinet fronts, handles and the backsplash. Clean counters with a product approved for their material. Follow appliance instructions for the oven and refrigerator, and allow shelves to reach room temperature before washing to avoid thermal shock.
Do not move heavy appliances or disconnect gas lines yourself. If cleaning behind an appliance is required, arrange safe access in advance.
Bathrooms: buildup before polish
Clean the shower, tub, basin and toilet using separate cloths for toilet surfaces. Use only products compatible with tile, grout and fixtures; acidic cleaners can damage natural stone. Follow label contact times when disinfecting, and never mix cleaning products. Finish with mirrors, handles and accessible shelving.
Bedrooms and living areas
Dust accessible ledges, baseboards and closet shelves. Wipe switches and door handles without saturating electrical fittings. Spot-test painted surfaces before removing marks, and avoid aggressive scrubbing. Vacuum edges and corners before cleaning the rest of the floor according to its care instructions.
The final walkthrough
- Check inside each cupboard and behind every door.
- Remove rubbish and collect your cleaning supplies.
- Look at rooms in good light for missed dust or streaks.
- Document the condition and flag existing damage separately.
